Breeding Guppies (Poecilia Reticulata)

Guppies are livebearers, meaning the eggs are fertilized inside the female. After 30 days mom guppies will deliver from 20 to 50 babies completely developed. These transparent miniature guppies will soon swing in search of hidden places, before they can attract unwanted attention from any adult fish in the tank. Other livebearer like mollies, swordtails, platys, including fellow guppies and their own mother will celebrate their arrival buy eating them! Talking about scary situations!

Once the female is pregnant (and you would not have any doubts by looking at mom’s big belly) you should transfer her to a small 5-10 gallon bare tank. Add some dense plants like Java moss, hornwort or water sprite to protect the future fry, have some of them floating. Make sure the water temperature matches the original aquarium, add a heater if needed.

Female guppies should be handle with lots of care, stressful situations should be avoided. Placing them into those small plastic breeding traps is not the best choice. Don’t wait until the last minute to move them to the spawning tank. Often times they will drop the babies which may not be yet completely formed.

Here is a little bit of trivia:
Did you know that female guppies can get pregnant without the presence of males? Well … kind of … females can store sperm from a previous mating for several weeks and get pregnant again even if no males are longer around.
Did you know that guppies have 23 pairs of chromosomes, including one pair of sex chromosomes, the same amount as humans?
Did you know that local governments have used guppies to control mosquito ourbreaks?

A final tip for you livebearer-guppy fans, the guppies you see at the store have been selectively bred to produce many different strains with beautiful colors and fancy tail forms, such as the snakeskin and grass varieties. However guppies in the wild are dull and plain brown or grey looking fish with little or no colors at all. After few generations of random mating, they soon will revert to the wild-looking fish, and lose much of their beautiful aquaria-made trends. To avoid unpleasant surprises obtain an authentic strain batch of guppies from reputable breeders
