Chromis best fishes for those just starting

Chromis Tank Fish

Chromis are colorful little fishes that live in schools and are part of the Damselfish family.Like the Damsels, these are some of the best fishes for those just starting out in the marine aquarium hobby. Many types are brightly colored, active and quite entertaining to observe. They are found in coral reefs throughout the world, sometimes in large schools, where they feed on algae, plankton and small invertebrates. Most Chromis grow to only 2 to 4 inches or so.

Chromis do very well in the home aquarium and are long lived – some species can survive for up to 15 years! They are very hardy and unlike most Damselfishes, they can be kept in groups without pecking each other to death. In fact, it is best to keep Chromis in a small school of 6 or more in order for them to thrive.

Their tank should be decorated with plenty of rocks and caves for them to hide in. Chromis are also easy to feed and will accept all types of food; they should be offered a varied diet of both meaty fare and vegetable based products to keep them in top shape.

These peaceful fish pose no threat to other fishes or corals and should not be kept with aggressive or predatory tankmates.

Chromis have been successfully bred in captivity, but it is not easy. After spawning the male will usually care for and protect the eggs. After a week or so, the eggs hatch and the fry should be removed to their own tank. They require very clean water and a special diet of rotifers until they are large enough to be fed baby brine shrimp.
